"The Toronto Maple Leafs season started on Wednesday night with a 3-2 OT win at home against the Montreal Canadiens. New Leafs' star John Tavares was there and scored a goal in his debut, however the team is still missing one of their stars from last year, William Nylander. On Wednesday Brendan Shanahan made some comments that were clearly directed to Nylander through the media as the Leafs' President stated he needs his players to make financial sacrifices for the greater good of the team. It's a tough ask in 2018 as young players are cashing in left and right on long term deals. Nylander who's currently without contract and holding out, is training in Sweden and spoke with the local media as the forward is losing about $20k-40k a day during his holdout."Right now, I do not know more than all the rest of you. I have not received any message and have no contact with Toronto. It's my agent who takes care of everything. Yes, it is clear that there is a lot of money, but in the end I have to take care of myself and do what myself and my agent think is right. Especially if it's about several years to come. I have to think long-term. It's my own future it's about."Nylander was asked if he watched Wednesday's game."No, but I saw highlights from the match in the morning. These were great goals. I want to play, but now it's the way it is. But I want to stay in Toronto." You can check out the full interview in Swedish here. "
