After a horrible loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday, Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and John Tavares made comments that were never uttered under Sheldon Keefe.
Craig Berube was very blunt following Tuesday's loss and has brought an accountability to the Leafs that was seldomly seen under Keefe. That accountability appears to have rubbed off on the Leafs' leadership group as Tavares, Marner and Matthews avoided using their 'lesson learned' cliche last night that was frequently utilized during their time under Keefe. Each of them called out the total team effort and discussed what needs to be fixed.
"The neutral zone was the Autobahn for them tonight," said Matthews. "They were just coming in flying through & we didn't have very good gaps, very good angles, you know, didn't transition very well."
Marner and Tavares shared a similar sentiment, emphasizing that the Leafs were way too slow to begin the game and were never able to recover.
"Just not good from the start. Not competitive enough throughout the game," commented Marner. "They brought their best & we brought our worst."
"Too slow out of the gate... Too loose with our game," Tavares responded to the question of what went wrong. "Our game has to be much tighter than it was."
Although the Leafs had their worst game of the young season on Tuesday night, the fact that Matthews, Marner and Tavares all took accountability and avoided using the same excuses that fans had become frustrated with hearing under Keefe confirms that Berube has gotten buy-in from everyone on the team.
