The biggest off ice topic currently hovering over the Toronto Maple Leafs is the future of Jack Campbell with the team. There was some speculation that the team had started extension talks with the goalie, but Campbell's agent came out publicly and shot down that speculation saying no negotiations have begun. "Whoever said we are talking is full of crap. That's so inaccurate.... There's been no material discussions. Jack just wants to play hockey. That's it."
It's likely because Campbell and his agent know he's in for a big payday if things go his way. NHL insider Pierre LeBrun recently took a look at what Campbell could earn this offseason and he might price himself out of Toronto. LeBrun points to the recent contract signings by Cal Petersen and Juuse Saros, both players carrying an AAV of $5million over their new contracts. The insider adds that the Leafs will likely ask Campbell to take a pay cut like Morgan Rielly in the $4million AAV rang, however it's not likely Campbell will do it. «It is hard to see how he wouldn't be ahead of Petersen and (Linus) Ullmark, and he might end up ahead of (Elvis) Merzlikins as well,'' said one rival NHL team executive.
Do you think Campbell's time in Toronto is done after this season?
