Sheldon Keefe offers up a premium response to Rielly's end of game actions against Sens forward
With the Toronto Maple Leafs net empty in the final minute against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night, Sens forward Ridly Greig sealed the Sens victory by emphatically slapping the puck into the empty net on a breakaway.
The Leafs, and especially veteran defenseman Morgan Rielly, were not pleased with Greig's actions and Rielly not took exception, he made sure to deliver a very clear-cut message to Greig and the Sens. Rielly cross-checked Greig high and sent him to the ice before everyone on the ice became involved in the scrum. Following the game, the Leafs were asked about the scrum, with Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe leading the way.
"I thought it was appropriate," said Keefe before defending his team's actions. "Their player has the right to do what he wants at that moment. Our players have the right to react. It is the emotions of the game. That is the way it goes. I am sure they will look at it."
Forwards John Tavares and Max Domi shared similar responses, saying that the team is going to stick together and show they can't be pushed around.
"In a situation like that, we stick together, Domi said. "Obviously, we didn't like that. It's an emotional game. No matter what happens. Start to finish. Puck drop to the buzzer. We're going to stick together. We don't get pushed around."
Meanwhile, Leafs goaltender Martin Jones had the most blunt response.
"Just a stupid thing to do by their guy at the end."
Rielly received a major penalty for charging and game misconduct and will likely have a hearing with the NHL's Player Safety department. Rielly was also not made available post-game for comment, though I'm sure he'd have said something similar to what Keefe, Domi and Jones had to say.
