In less than two weeks, the NHL's new and currently untitled docu-series will premiere on Amazon. It features Connor McDavid, David Pastrnak and William Nylander among other stars and was created in an attempt to give fans the access that the PGA Tour and Formula 1 have given their fans through 'Full Swing' and 'Drive to Survive'.
During Game 4 of their first-round series against the Boston Bruins, Nylander, Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews got into a heated exchange on the bench. It quickly went viral on social media and fans have been dying to know what exactly was said that made things so tense. Whether that moment makes it into the docu-series remains to be seen, but giving fans access to moments like that would certainly draw significant attention to the league.
While Nylander was mic'd up for the docu-series, fans have been clamoring for additional mic'd up moments as a means of discovering what these players are like behind the curtain. Imagine having someone like Ryan Reaves mic'd up? Known as a locker room guy, fans would love to be able to get a behind-the-scenes look into the comical side of Reaves as well as the respect exchanged between him and whomever he fights.
Bill Daly admitted that the league is behind other sports in terms of accessibility for fans and granting more un-edited or minorly edited access to these types of moments would help the league continue to grow the game. Hopefully, the first season of the docu-series is a success, and the NHL continues to produce similar content.
