Toronto Maple Leafs fans can breathe a sigh of relief after an update on goaltender Joseph Woll, who was absent from Tuesday's practice.
Injury concerns were rampant among the Toronto Maple Leafs' loyal fan base earlier today following the news that goaltender Joseph Woll was absent from practice.
Woll, who was compared to a Toronto Maple Leafs Hall-of-Fame goaltender over the weekend by coach Craig Berube, has had to handle an increased workload since the injury to fellow goalie Anthony Stolarz.
According to the Leafs, that's what led to him being a no-show at the Maple Leafs' practice. Berube told reporters that putting Woll out there would have meant the goaltender would compete as hard as he could on every play. Risking an injury just wasn't worth it in what is a particularly busy week for the team.
"He had a maintenance day today because, if he's out there, he's going to compete on every puck. And he's at the level right now, he's playing a lot for us and he needed a day. But extremely talented goalie and competitive."
Berube had nothing but praise for his current number one netminder, who is riding a 3-game winning streak.
"Well, he's very talented. That's definitely one thing. And a very hard worker. He works extremely hard in practice, tries on every play in practice. That's where we've got to kind of pull back a little bit at times and [provide] maintenance."
Woll has made four straight starts in seven days and is expected to get the start against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday night, which is more evidence of the faith that Berube and the rest of the team have in him right now.
Woll is making the big saves at the right times for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the trust he's been given by Craig Berube has been well earned.
