The Florida Panthers and Ottawa Senators treated us to some good old fashioned prison yard puck last night as the two teams set the current season's record for penalty minutes in a game. The score itself was a tad lopsided with the Panthers winning easily 5-0, but the Senators didn't go down without a fight, or fights. A total of 167 penalty minutes were amassed between the two clubs, including 106 at one stoppage of play.

Things seemed to begin to get out of control at the end of the second period when the Panthers were up 3-0 as Matthew Tkachuk was given 2 minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct and 2 minutes for roughing and Ottawa's Travis Hamonic was given 2 minutes for roughing. With just under 10 minutes to go in the third period, Jake Sanderson and Matthew Tkachuk sparked the chaos with a quick fight that saw Tkachuk with a decisive victory.

A few minutes later, with the Panthers up 4-0, things became unhinged during a scrum behind the Panthers net that saw 106 penalty minutes handed out and one of the best penalty calls from an official you'll ever hear. During the scrum, there were multiple times that things looked as though they were calming down, until Brady Tkachuk would grab the closest Panther to him and let off a couple of quick jabs. Grandma Tkachuk was thoroughly not impressed by any of it, as you can see from her reaction at one point in the video below.

As things settled down, referee Garrett Rank came over to the penalty box and announced all of the penalties in a hilarious way.

"Everybody on the ice has a 10-minute misconduct amongst other penalties," said Rank

It also led to Panthers head coach Paul Maurice having some fun on the bench, counting the number of players he had while subtly laughing. Following the game, Maurice was asked about the game and the chaos that took place.

"That's mild, we only got to 160 something minutes there, it's got to get into the 250's before it gets too squirrelly,"
said Maurice with a smile on his face.

Given the number of misconducts and penalties handed out in total, it would be surprising if the league stepped in and handed out any supplemental discipline. This was just an old fashioned, emotional game and quite frankly, the NHL needs more of these. It's the type of hockey that people tune in for and will help grow the game.
