With the NHL trade deadline approaching on Friday, March 7th at 3:00pm ET, it's expected that there will be a flurry of trades as contending teams look to bolster their rosters ahead of the playoffs.
One of the more surprising names to have landed on the trading block ahead of Friday's trade deadline is long-time Boston Bruin and Toronto Maple Leafs archrival, Brad Marchand.
According to TSN's Chris Johnston on Thursday's edition of Insider Trading, via PuckEmpire on Instagram:
"The feeling league-wide is that the Bruins are likely going to trade Brad Marchand to the Western Conference."
Marchand is reportedly banged-up and is expected to miss significant time, but will return before the start of the playoffs. Elliotte Friedman provided an update on his status during a segment on the NHL Network on Thursday.
"Earlier this week the Bruins said Marchand would be out on a week-to-week basis. However, it has been indicated to the team that it will be longer than that, and he will return closer to the playoffs."
The career Bruin has had a remarkable NHL career, amassing 976 points in 1,090 regular season games. Marchand has continued to showcase his abilities this season,
recording 47 points in 61 games, as well as being named to Team Canada for the 4 Nations Face-Off, proving that he still has a lot of quality hockey left in the tank.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are certainly familiar with Marchand, given his long-standing rivalry with the team. Although reports suggest he will be traded to a Western Conference team, the prospect of acquiring arguably the most hated player of the last decade-plus for their upcoming playoff run could be very enticing.
The Maple Leafs have yet to make any significant moves as the trade deadline approaches. With more and more players either getting traded,
injured, or re-signing with their current teams, the Leafs will need to act swiftly to make avoid missing out on their preferred targets.
In addition, the Leafs
waived Ryan Reaves earlier on Thursday, which gives them some additional financial flexibility.
