With training camp fast approaching, it's high-time for NHL teams to start bringing in free agents on professional tryout contracts (PTO). While the Maple Leafs are perusing the market for a left-winger, believed to be finalizing a deal with Max Pacioretty, the Calgary Flames announced today that they have signed defenseman Tyson Barrie to a PTO.
The 13-year veteran is hoping to latch onto a team after sporadically playing for the Nashville Predators last year. He averaged 18:19 TOI, which was his lowest total since his rookie season and he only appeared in 41 contests.
After spending the first 8 years of his career in Colorado, Barrie was moved to Toronto ahead of the 2019-20 season as part of the Nazem Kadri blockbuster. He played just one year with the Maple Leafs, where he tallied 39 points in 70 contests, but found himself labelled as the black sheep for his defensive play.
He left for the Edmonton Oilers the following year and settled back in nicely with 132 points in 190 games before being moved to Nashville as part of the Mattias Ekholm trade. Barrie now hopes he can stick around with the Flames with a strong training camp.
In 809 games played across 13 seasons, Barrie has 109 goals and 505 points, all while averaging 21:07 TOI. He is still a solid power play quarterback who can play meaningful minutes for teams desperately seeking defensemen at the moment.
