On Tuesday, Matt Dumba taught 2023 1st overall pick Connor Bedard a valuable lesson. Never stand still, admiring your pass.
During last night's Coyotes/Blackhawks game, Bedard carried the puck into the offensive zone before turning his back and seeking an open man.
After firing off the pass, however, Bedard stood there, admiring his work. That's when Dumba skated through him and finished his check on the unsuspecting rookie.
Dumba sent Bedard crashing hard into the boards with a good, clean hit, but thankfully Bedard popped right back up.
When you see the different angles of the hit, it's somewhat surprising that he did as it was a thunderous check.
There's no question that Bedard is going to be a special player in this league, as 1st overall picks often are.
Still, as an 18-year-old, there are still some adjustments he's going to have to make at the NHL level. He was very elusive in the WHL during his time with the Regina Pats, but he's finding out now that he's a much easier target for the bigger, faster NHLers.
Hopefully he can figure out, sooner than later, that he has to keep his feet moving and be a little more aware of his surroundings in the best league in the world.
