Some breaking news to announce on Saturday afternoon as the New York Islanders have fired head coach Lane Lambert. The news comes on the heels of a 4-game losing skid as the Islanders are beginning to slip out of playoff contention.

The big news is not the firing of Lambert, but rather over who will replace him as the head coach on Long Island. Lambert's replacement will be none other than the legendary Patrick Roy.

The Islanders are largely an aging group, so it will be interesting to see if Roy's presence on Long Island is the start of something much bigger, such as a top to bottom rebuild. At this point, the Islanders are 19-15-11 on the season, so it will be interesting to see whether they become sellers at this year's trade deadline.

Roy last coached in the NHL in 2015-16, when he was behind the bench in Colorado. The NHL legend coached 3 NHL seasons with the Avs, leading them to the playoffs in his first season behind the bench in 2013-14, but missed the playoffs in his next two seasons.

Roy left the NHL in 2016, taking a couple of years off before returning as a head coach in the QMJHL, ultimately leading Quebec Remparts to a QMJHL championship last season. Huge add for the Islanders.
