The Leafs ultimately decided to go with a Matt Murray-Ilya Samsonov tandem, while leaving the more coveted free agent goaltenders (including Jack Campbell) to sign with other teams. At points, the Leafs were linked to each of Marc-Andre Fleury, John Gibson and Ville Husso, among oters. However, while the Leafs may have not made the most predictable move in net, it's certainly paying off early with Samsonov, who is currently 2-0-0 with a 2.00 GAA and a .926 SV%. Meanwhile, Murray put together a monstrous training camp, but lost his first start for the Leafs in Montreal - though the team did "hang him out to dry", as Sheldon Keefe put it.
That aside, let's take a peek at how many of the Leafs' options from this summer have been fairing with their new teams - more specifically, their outings on Saturday.
From October 15th games:
Jack Campbell - 4GA - 7 saves on 11 shots
Marc-Andre Fleury - 4GA - 10 saves on 14 shots
John Gibson - 5GA - 22 saves on 27 shots
Eric Comrie - 4GA - 33 saves on 37 shots
Cam Talbot: Injured
Darcy Kuemper - 1GA - 21 saves on 22 shots (4GA in first game of season)
Ville Husso - didn't play, but got shutout in first game
While the sample size is tiny, it goes to show that most of the goaltending options that the Leafs were linked to in the offseason are not off to the best start, and just how hit or miss goaltending can be in the NHL. It can be difficult to predict which goalie is going to have a good year, or when they will be on their best game.
Time will tell to determine if the Leafs made the right choice with their tandem, but early on, it seems they were smart to avoid signing or acquiring goaltenders with large term, and we'll see if it pays off for them.
