Auston Matthews is on another level this season. Through 12 games, he's potted 13 goals and 3 hat tricks. He leads the NHL in goals, obviously, and if he keeps this pace through 82 games, he'll finish the season with 89, yes, eighty-nine goals. He sits just 3 points off of the lead for the Art Ross trophy as well, and is on pace for a 114-point season.

Given the fact that he's doing all this while playing in all situations for the first time this season, he belongs in both the Hart and Selke conversations as well.

How ridiculous has Matthews' start to the season been? Good enough that he is outscoring an entire NHL team. The San Jose Sharks have somehow managed only 12 goals through their first 11 games. I understand wanting to bottom out to secure a high draft pick, but what the Sharks are doing goes well beyond tanking. I haven't seen anyone this sink this fast to bottom of the Pacific since James Cameron took on the Challenger Deep!

Now, one has to assume that, eventually, the Sharks will stop sinking and start swimming. No team can possibly be this bad for an entire season, can they? The fact that they have 18 skaters being single handedly out scored by one guy is truly pathetic, but it also speaks to just how good Auston Matthews is. This year is shaping up to be even better than his 60 goal 2021-22 campaign. Is it possible he hits 70 goals? The last players to do so were Alexander Mogilny and Teemu Selanne in 1992-93. Nobody has scored more than 65 in the salary cap era.
