The first overall pick in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, Connor Bedard, scored a hat-trick in his first game in a Blackhawks jersey and every goal was more ridiculous than the last. His shot, quick release, and hockey IQ was on full display on all three goals, further pushing the narrative that he is truly a generational talent.
Third overall pick Adam Fantilli lit up the stage for the Columbus Blue Jackets with a hat-trick and two helpers to cap off a 5-point night in a 10-7 victory. Not only did he record 5 points, but he also fired 9 shots on goal, was a plus-2, and both assists were of the primary variety. Expected by most to be the 2nd overall pick, the Blue Jackets lucked out with Fantilli after the Ducks decided to go with Leo Carlsson at 2nd overall instead.
Speaking of Carlsson, he had a quieter first outing, playing on Friday and recording just one point - a very nifty primary assist - feeding defenseman Tristan Luneau with a perfect cross-crease pass to get the Ducks on the board.
For years to come it will be a raging debate on who should have been taken 2nd overall between Fantilli and Carlsson. Both are extremely skilled with Fantilli having won the Hobey Baker Award after a tremendous collegiate season, while Carlsson only has 2 players in the history of the SHL that have had more points in their draft eligible seasons - the Sedin twins. They did pretty well for themselves.
So far, advantage Fantilli after his ridiculous performance.
