Alex Ovechkin breaks his silence on situation in Europe
Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin came under fire on Thursday when he would not meet with the media in New York, and while it was the choice of the team and not the player, it didn't stop the Rangers fans from booing Ovechkin on his first shift.
Ovechkin had previously openly supported Russian President Vladimir Putin, which is one of the primary reasons why everyone in the hockey world was curious as to what he might have had to say regarding the Russian invasion in the Ukraine. Nevertheless, Ovi was not prepared to speak on Thursday.
On Friday afternoon, Ovechkin finally broke his silence on the matter. He spoke honestly and with his family in mind when he addressed the subject.
"It's a hard situation. I have family back in Russia and it is scary moments. But we can't do anything. We just hope it going to be end soon and everything is going to be all right.
Please, no more war. It doesn't matter who is in the war -- Russia, Ukraine, different countries -- I think we live in a world, like, we have to live in peace and a great world.
Ovechkin's wife, children and parents, among other family, still live in Russia. There were obvious concerns over their safety, which is why Ovechkin wanted to take his time before speaking on Russia moving on the Ukraine.
Obviously, it goes without saying that there are no winners in war - a sentiment that Ovechkin wished to share on Friday - and now that he has spoken on the matter, it stands to reason that he'll likely do what he can to keep his mind off of the things that he cannot control and on the things he can, which is trying to win games with the Washington Capitals.
