An NHL Insider provides the latest info on Sheldon Keefe and when we can expect a decision from the Leafs
One of the biggest questions following the Leafs' hiring of Brad Treliving was whether or not that meant that Sheldon Keefe would be back next year or if he'd be let go by the new GM. Well, here we are two weeks later asking the same questions and, finally, we may be getting closer to an official answer.
TSN's Chris Johnston made an appearance on TSN1050's First Up this morning and one of the things he had been asked was whether or not the Leafs are still contemplating a coaching change. Not only did CJ suggest that the more likely scenario is that he stays, but he also put a timeline on when we might be able to expect our answer.
"The truth is, I don't know what's going to happen. I haven't heard of the Leafs' management interviewing anyone else. I'm sure they've had at least the hypothetical exercises, saying 'well, if we were to move on from him, would we get person A, person B, person C?', but I don't think it's been that high a priority.
I think that there's just been a lot of things on the new general manager's plate... we're at the point where Sheldon Keefe is going need to know at some point. He does have a contract for next year, but I would imagine that he's looking for clarity here... I would be surprised if it went beyond the end of this week without us at least knowing one way or the other, but I don't have any reason to suspect that the timing suggests that a change is coming." - Johnston on Keefe's future in Toronto
Johnston went on to say that with all of the tasks still ahead for Brad Treliving, it's highly unlikely that a coaching change is a priority to him at this time and, really, if he did decide to retain Keefe, who could blame him? With the Leafs still having to make decisions on 20 UFAs and RFAs, plus with the extensions due for Auston Matthews and William Nylander, there's a lot of work to be done over the next couple of weeks. Adding a coaching search on top of that would only add to the chaos.
