However, this morning on TSN's radio show First Up, former Leaf Carlo Colaiacovo mentioned a surprising name that could become a candidate as soon as tonight. Colaiacovo mentioned that current Dallas Stars GM Jim Nill is a possible candidate to replace Kyle Dubas.
Colaiacovo: "A name that I heard pop up yesterday is Jim Nill...he's got one year left on his current deal and has a really close relationship with Shanahan from their time in Detroit. We'll see how this plays out if he's a guy they want to interview when Dallas gets eliminated."
Nill would be an excellent candidate for the Leafs GM spot just based on his drafting ability alone, with players like Jake Oettninger, Roope Hintz, Jason Robertson and Miro Heiskanen being part of Dallas' young core for the foreseeable future. On top of that, he hasn't been scared to make a big trade or spend money at free agency to fill holes. Personally, I would rather have Nill as GM than Treliving.
Nill has also publicly criticized his star players when they have underperformed. Just a few short years ago, he called out captain Jamie Benn and alternate captain Tyler Seguin out by name for their lackluster performances and lofty paychecks.
