Arizona Coyotes once again the laughing stock of the NHL after new ASU arena name announced
The Arizona Coyotes just can't seem to get out of their own way when it comes to being the laughing stock of the league. First they didn't pay their bills and then they had their lease cancelled. Now they're playing the next 3 years out of a 5000-seat college arena at ASU, which somehow the NHL decided was appropriate.
As the arena approached completion, Commissioner Gary Bettman said, "You do what you have to do when you believe in a market long-term." Uhhh, Gary, you've been trying to build that market for 25 years. At some point you have to throw in the towel.
Arizona State University announced yesterday that they (and the Coyotes) finally have a name for their brand new arena. That name is Mullett Arena. No, that is not a joke. Well, it's a joke, but not in the sense that it's made up for laughs. That's actually the name of the arena. The laughing stock of the NHL is now going to be playing out of Mullett Arena.
The arena is named after philanthropists and ASU donors Donald and Barbara Mullett. It's a completely understandable move from the university's perspective, but it's hilarious that the worst-run team in the NHL has to play out of an arena whose name is synonymous with "business in the front, party in the back" haircut. Get ready for a sea of mullets and pit viper sunglasses in the crowd.
