Vrana was the key piece the Wings received along with Richard Panik, a 2021 first rounder and a 2022 second rounder when they traded Anthony Mantha to Washington a few years ago. Vrana currently has this season and next on his current contract that will pay him an AAV of $5.25M per season.
Earlier this season, Vrana entered the NHLPA's Player Assistance Program and, as mentioned, was with Grand Rapids on a conditioning stint in the hopes of returning to the Wings' lineup. In 2 games with the Wings this season he had a goal and an assist and last season in 26 games he had 19 points. This could just be a paper transaction so that he can play more than the maximum 5 games with Grand Rapids, but if it is not, we hope Vrana continues to get the help he needs for whatever it is he is going through.
As far as Vrana's on-ice performance goes, the 26-year-old sits second in the league in 5v5 goals/60 over the last 3 seasons, behind only Auston Matthews. So, the kid is pretty good.
