For Leafs superstar Auston Matthews, the year 2022 was full of ups and downs. Obviously, winning the Rocket Richard and Hart Memorial Trophies as well as the Ted Lindsay Award were huge ups. As for the downs, well, losing to the Tampa Bay Lightning in round 1 was a pretty low point of the year for Matthews and the Buds.
Now with 2022 officially done, we look back on a very productive calendar year for Matthews, who actually led the entire NHL in goals scored from January 1st 2022, through December 31st, 2022. Matthews finished the year with an astounding 58 goals. David Pastrnak and Connor McDavid sat one behind Matthews, with 57 goals apiece, followed closely by Jason Robertson (56) and Kirill Kaprizov (55).
Thus far in 2022-23, Matthews has notched just 18 goals, good for 19th in the league and 14 goals behind Connor McDavid (32) for the league lead. Obviously, it's surprising to see Matthews so far out of the race at the midway point of the season, but Matthews did vow this year to be more details-focused and committed to playing the game the right way and not cheating on offense. With that in mind, we're not likely to see Matthews top this list again in 2023 - especially since McDavid has been so vocal about wanting to become more of a goal-scorer than a playmaker.
