At first, there was some concern for Matthews, who had left the game as a result of the collision. Some were wondering if he had perhaps broken his jaw on the play. All of those concerns were alleviated a short time later, when Matthews returned to the bench and took shifts in the final few minutes of the contest.
Teammates including Mitch Marner and Jake Muzzin poked some fun at Matthews at Saturday's morning skate ahead of the team's game against the St. Louis Blues, but we hadn't really heard from Matthews until today.
Following practice at Ford Performance Center on Sunday, Matthews was asked about the now infamous blooper and how it happened. Here's what he had to say.
I mean, let's be honest.. What are you even going to say if you're Auston Matthews? His response was a great one and I'm glad to see he has a good sense of humour about the whole thing, even if it did come across as blunt and sarcastic.
However, despite the fact that he's on the mend and sporting a new set of summer teeth (you know, summer here, summer there), you know that he has just given 31 other teams from around the league some ammunition to chirp him throughout the remainder of the season. Thankfully, it's Matthews, and he scores A LOT - so he'll likely be the one who gets the last laugh on most of those occasions.
