After acquiring 28-year-old Matt Murray from the Ottawa Senators on Monday, it appears as though the Leafs are working vigorously on a plan to secure a potential backup for the two-time Stanley Cup Champion.

According to The Athletic's Arthur Staple, the Leafs have zeroed in on their partner for Murray in 25-year-old Ilya Samsonov. Samsonov has 94 NHL appearances to date, with a 53-23-10 record to go along with a combined 2.82 GAA and a career .903 SV%. The deal is for 1 year at $1.8M.

Samsonov was a 1st round pick in 2015, 22nd overall and just never really lived up to his potential in Washington. Perhaps a change of scenery will do the youngster some good. He has shown some flashes of brilliance and the potential is there. Now it will be up to Sanford, Elkin and the rest of the Leafs' goaltending department to see if they can help him realize that potential.

Huge signing by Leafs GM Kyle Dubas here, with real boom potential.
