Again, this rumour has not been confirmed by any verified NHL Insiders, but if these deals do occur, I'd imagine that they'll be at a heavily discounted rate. For Subban, a league minimum deal makes some sense with his estimated career earnings around the $78M range. His age (33) is another indicator that, if he does sign, it could be for a very modest cap figure.
Meanwhile, Domi has an estimated career earnings of right around $20M and at just 27 years of age, this could be his last opportunity to sign a long-term, big-money contract. That said, Domi has not had the opportunity to play for a true contender up until this past deadline, when he was dealt to the Carolina Hurricanes. Perhaps a chance at chasing a Stanley Cup could entice him to sign a short-term, low money deal to try to boost his value over the next 2 or 3 seasons to attempt to cash in at 29 or 30 years of age.
Domi is a household name in Toronto after Max's dad, Tie, spent 11 years as a Leaf. I'm not going to lie - seeing the name "Domi" on the back of a Leafs jersey again would have a very high nostalgia value for me and countless others. That said, it has to make sense from a hockey standpoint. If Leafs GM Kyle Dubas is attempting to build a contending team, everyone he brings in has to be the right fit.
We'll see where this one goes, but if one or both of these players end up in Toronto, there may be a lot of very excited Leafs fans. I'm sure some won't be as happy, but there's no pleasing everyone.
