Bruins and Blackhawks complete a significant trade just days before the draft
Heading into this off-season, the Bruins were in a cap crunch due to $4.5M in bonus overages and had been trying to free cap space since the season ended. Today they accomplished that feat by dealing Taylor Hall and Nick Foligno to Chicago.
Hall has 2 years left at an AAV of $6m per season while Foligno is a UFA on July 1. Before the trade, the Bruins had just over $4.9M in cap space and were hoping to resign both Dmirtri Orlov, Garnet Hathaway and Tyler Bertuzzi, but would have only been able to keep one or two, but not all 3. With this trade, they will likely take a run at re-signing all 3 of them.
For Taylor Hall, this will be the sixth team he has played for since being drafted 1st overall in 2010 and he will be the first ever 1st overall pick to play for six different teams since Bryan Berard.
