Pretty much everyone is on the same page in the sense that the understanding is that Carey Price's career is over. The veteran netminder played just 25 games in 2020-21 and 5 games in 2021-22. He did not play in 2022-23 at all and will not play in 2023-24 either. Still, Price has 3 years remaining on his current deal, which carries a staggering $10.5M cap hit - a contract that some would call "unmovable".

The Athletic's Michael Russo and Pierre LeBrun had a chance to sit down with Canadiens GM Kent Hughes this week and had asked if the Habs were interested in getting rid of the final 3 seasons of Price's deal. Here's what Hughes had to say on the subject:

"I think there's always a possibility to do things. I don't know what that looks like, and I don't know ultimately if that ever happens, but I certainly wouldn't describe it as an impossibility." - Habs GM Kent Hughes on the possibility of moving Carey Price's contract

Call me crazy, but that sounds like agent-speak for "we're doing everything we can to move him". You have to believe that the Canadiens have reached out to a number of teams this summer, trying to find a taker. The fact of the matter is that if Price is done, unless the Habs intend to add a significant sweetener, that's going to be a very tough deal to move.

LeBrun and Russo were quick to point out that most or all of Price's salary would be covered by insurance, but even still, finding a team that is willing to take on a $10.5M cap hit for 3 more seasons is not an easy job. We certainly shouldn't envy Hughes here. That's a tough gig.
