Less than one week ago, the Vancouver Canucks struck a deal with pending UFA forward J.T. Miller to keep him in the fold in Vancouver for, presumably, the rest of his NHL career. The 29-year-old's new 7-year, $56M pact does not kick in until 2023-24, which means he'll be 37 when his new deal expires. However, Canucks GM Patrik Allvin made a very puzzling comment that has some wondering whether or not Miller will be dealt regardless of his new deal.

During a Tuesday press conference, Allvin revealed that the Canucks did not extend Miller's NMC/NTC on his new deal to include the final year of his existing contract. Sort of an odd comment to make regarding a player you just signed to a 7-year extension.

Allvin did state that the intention is to have Miller in Vancouver "for the long run", but one has to wonder whether or not a poor start to the season or a less than ideal run heading into this year's trade deadline might change his mind on the matter. He still has the flexibility to move Miller if he so chooses. I just found it curious that he elected to bring up that detail at all if the goal is, as he said, to have Miller finish his career in Vancouver.
