This off-season we have seen one of the most disappointing stories come to light from Hockey Canada. In 2018 a 20-year old woman was allegedly assaulted after a gala in London, Ontario by eight CHL players who were on the World Junior team who won gold that year. The situation wasn't handled correctly by Hockey Canada and it has certainly sparked a public outrage and a demand for changes in the culture of the sport.

Per Hockey Canada, Michael Brind'Amour has stepped down from his position as chair of Hockey Canada's Board of Executives effective immediately. Brind'Amour told Hockey Canada of his decision to step down on Friday. Hopefully this will be the first of many changes to the program.

Brind'Amour released the following statement on Friday:

"I have listened carefully and intently to the comments of Canadians about the culture of our sport and our organization, and about our actions and leadership. I understand that the actions we have taken in recent weeks are part of the solution. My final term ends in November 2022, and I know that there is no need to wait for a new era. Immediate action is essential to address the important challenges facing our organization and our sport, which our Action Plan works to accomplish. I would not be able to see this renewal through."

Brind'Amour was hired in 2018 by Hockey Canada as the Chair of the Board of Executives. His replacement will be decided in November at the annual board meeting for Hockey Canada.
