Treliving completed the first sign-and-trade in NHL history on July 22nd, when he signed Tkachuk to an 8-year, $76M deal and sent Tkachuk to Florida in exchange for Jonathan Huberdeau, MacKenzie Weegar, Cole Schwindt and a 1st round pick. The move is beginning to look like an absolute masterclass.
This week, Huberdeau agreed to sign an 8-year extension with the Flames, carrying a $10.5M AAV and now it looks as though Weegar is also gearing up to sign an extension in Calgary. According to TSN reporter Salim Nadim Valji, Weegar has a "strong, genuine desire" to get a deal done with the Flames and that the two sides are scheduled to meet this coming week to begin discussing the terms of an extension.
Honestly, this might be one of the best trades we've ever seen from a GM whose back was completely against a wall. Imagine a player, who has publicly stated that he wants out, being used as a trade chip to bring back the NHL's 2nd leading point-getter from last season, a bona-fide top-4 defenseman who excels everywhere, a decent prospect and a first round pick.
Where it once looked like Florida may have won the deal, since both pending UFAs (Huberdeau, Weegar) seemed likely to walk as free agents next summer, we're now staring down the barrel of a reloaded Calgary Flames group who has undergone one of the shrewdest re-tools one can imagine despite the unfavourable circumstances.
