Chara signs 1-day contract in Boston, promptly announces his retirement
At 6'9 and 250 pounds, Zdeno Chara was one of the largest players to ever play the game. Never known for his offensive contriutions, "Big Z" was one of the most feared players over his 25-year career and was willing to take on anyone, anytime.
Many people thought he may make a return for a 26th season, but early this morning Chara announced on Instagram that he would be retiring saying:
"After 25 seasons of professional hockey 1,680 NHL regular season games, 200 Stanley Cup Playoff games, and hundreds of international games I am proud to announce my decision to retire from the National Hockey League. In doing so, I am honored to return to TD Garden today to sign a one-day contract with the Boston Bruins and officially finish my career with the team that has meant so much to me and my family. There are so many people that have helped contribute to my success, including all of you, and I look forward to properly thanking everyone this afternoon."
If you're a Leaf fan, you'll remember that one time Bryan McCabe thought it was a good idea to fight Chara and was immediately tossed like a rag-doll. Chara did that to the majority of the players he fought. A feared presence on the ice, but off the ice, he was one of the kindest in the sport and we wish him all the best in the future.
