The move was a bit of a shock, as the Sens had suggested at multiple points that they had no real intention of making a coaching change this season as they looked to build some consistency in Ottawa. However, after a series of losses and with the Sens sitting dead last in the Eastern Conference, it would appear as though management had a change of heart.
According to Senators reporter Bruce Garrioch, the Sens have their eyes on another Leafs coach, or at least a coach within the Leafs' organization. Garrioch reported that the Senators have a strong interest in Marlies head coach John Gruden as Smith's successor once the season ends. Gruden was named head coach of the Marlies at the beginning of the season and has guided the team to a 12-7-4 record through 23 games, which is good enough for third in the North Division.
The 53-year-old was previously an assistant coach for the Boston Bruins last season and before that spent four seasons as an assistant coach with the New York Islanders. For those wondering why the Senators have already pinpointed their top candidate, it is likely because of the familiarity. Current President of Hockey Operations and interim GM of the Senators Steve Staios worked with Gruden when he was the head coach of the OHL's Hamilton Bulldogs and won the OHL championship together.
The Senators entered this season with high hopes, but an 11-15-0 record, and 3-7-0 record over their last 10 games have them sitting last in the Atlantic Division and last in the Eastern Conference.
