There was a bit of a scary scene in Winnipeg on Friday night during a meeting between the New York Rangers and Winnipeg Jets, as Rangers forward Ryan Carpenter had his head/ear lacerated by the skate blade of Jets defender Dylan DeMelo.

The play occurred during the second period as DeMelo and Carpenter were engaged in a puck battle/race. DeMelo went to throw a hit on Carpenter, who was pursuing a puck in the corner, while Carpenter tried to avoid the hit while off balance. The result of the play had Carpenter falling on the skate of DeMelo and skating off to the bench in some obvious discomfort. It wasn't until a few seconds later that the damage was revealed as more serious than first thought.

Carpenter actually shared some before and after photos of the gruesome injury and the repairs. Fair warning though, the photos are not for the faint of heart. As you can see below, not only did the accident cause a massive ear laceration, but also created an enormous gash on Carpenter's head, just behind the lacerated ear. Look at that stitch work!

Nobody ever said hockey was a sport for those with a weak stomach! That's one of the nastier cuts we've seen in recent memory. Thankfully, Carpenter seems to be okay, so that's the most important thing here, as the outcome could have been much, much worse.
