Rather than handling things quietly with the team behind the scenes and allowing GM Kevin Cheveldayoff to pursue a fair deal, Dubois handcuffed the Jets organization into either playing out the final two years that he's under team control and allowing him to walk as a free agent or sending him to the Habs at far, far less than what the market value should be for a player of his age and skill set. Either way, I can't imagine that the organization and the Jets fans are too pleased with PLD right about now.
To that end, Pierre-Luc Dubois has officially signed his qualifying offer with the Jets for 1 year at $6M. I'd imagine that the Jets will still look at trying to make the best deal that they can find at some point this year (perhaps even this summer) to avoid the embarrassment of having Dubois play there when he doesn't want to be there. The fans are going to let him hear it, his teammates aren't going to trust him and neither will his coaches.
Personally - if I'm Habs GM Kent Hughes, I'm calling PLD's agent and explaining that I want nothing to do with his client, simply because of the way he's handled himself, handcuffing both the Blue Jackets and then the Jets by going public with his desire to get out, pushing them into negotiating from a position of weakness. As the GM of a rebuilding franchise, that's not a guy who I'd want around my younger players and that's not the type of character that I'd want representing my organization. Dubois has made his bed. Now, regardless of what happens, he's going to have to lay in it.
