Sittler achieved the milestone in the 1977-78 season, while Olczyk did it in the 1989-90 season, just 12 years later. Marner, playing in his seventh season, has a chance to break the record and be the sole leader for the longest stretch of games with at least a point in Maple Leafs history.
With this in mind, Sittler stated, "Good for Mitch. I hope he keeps going and carries that record on as long as he can."
Over the course of his 18-game streak, Marner has amassed 24 points, well over a point per game. This streak has contributed to leading the Leafs in assists and points this season (21 assists, 29 points). Aside from his contribution to the Leafs, Marner currently sits 13th in the league in points, averaging well over a point per game.
Olczyk, who also wore number 16 for the Leafs in his tenure with the team, acknowledges what Marner is doing is quite remarkable. He stated, "I've always had a soft spot in my heart for all No.16's in Toronto because that's the number I wore. I'll be watching and living every shift with him, hoping he can accomplish something that I tried to do."
Only time will tell if Marner can achieve greatness against one of the league's best teams, but regardless of whether or not it happens, he has an entire nation standing behind him, rooting for his success and an eventual Stanley Cup victory.
