It wasn't the easiest summer for Elias Pettersson and the Vancouver Canucks, as contract talks had hit a number of snags. One of the biggest reasons why a deal has not yet been struck is that Pettersson wants to ensure that if/when he does commit to a long-term deal, that he's not going to be committing to a losing culture. He wants to win and if the Canucks can show him that they're capable of winning with their current core, then it may only be a matter of time before he finally puts pen to paper. However, it's a two-way street and if the Canucks want to be winners, Pettersson will have to do his part as well.

Not only has Pettersson come into this season having added a bit more size and strength, but he appears to be focused on adding a new element to his game as well, showing that he's not shy to finish his checks either. He displayed this on Wednesday during the Canucks' home opener against the Edmonton Oilers when he absolutely trucked Oilers defenseman Cody Ceci.

When you look at the hit, it's probably textbook charging, with Pettersson having taken a good 6 or 7 strides before torpedoing himself at Ceci - though it was a clear shoulder-to-chest hit, which was fine. No penalty was assessed on the play, so he got away with one for sure.

Pettersson put up 4 points, as did J.T. Miller and Brock Boeser in an 8-1 win over the Oilers as the Canucks have begun the season on a winning note. If Pettersson continues to produce like this and throw his weight around a little bit more than we're used to seeing, not only will he be in for a massive contract extension, but the Canucks may do some damage in the Pacific Division this season.
