With Claude Giroux having departed the Philadelphia Flyers at this past trade deadline after 15 years with the team, nine as captain, there are a lot of questions about how the Flyers will fare this season.

There are a few potential candidates to take over as captain in Philly, the most logical of which is veteran forward Sean Couturier. Couturier aside, the Flyers also have Kevin Hayes, Cam Atkinson and Ryan Ellis who could all make decent captains. Of course, Ellis' bid for captaincy would depend heavily on his health status moving forward.

While fans like their team to have a captain, it's not uncommon for clubs to forego naming a successor to a vacated captaincy right away. According to new Flyers bench boss, John Tortorella, naming a captain has not even crossed his mind yet.

"I am in no rush to name a captainas far as the room, I have major concerns about the room."

Obviously, with the comments that Tortorella has made about the locker room in Philly already, it may not be a matter of who the next captain will be or when a captain will be named this season - he might not name one at all this season. The Calgary Flames still have not named a new captain since the departure of now Leaf Mark Giordano, so it wouldn't be unheard of for the Flyers to play the year out and name a new captain next summer or at some point beyond.
