The Leafs rolled into New York on Thursday intent on extending their 15-game point streak to 16 games and tying a franchise record against the Rangers. However, it was the Rangers who skated away with the victory, simultaneously snapping the streaks of the team, Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews in one fell swoop. The Leafs' aforementioned point streak ended at 15 games, Marner's point streak ended at 23 games and Auston Matthews' point streak ended at 8 games. Michael Bunting, however, did extend his streak to 10 games with the lone Leafs goal.

Not only did the Rangers play spoiler to the Leafs on Thursday, but a former Leaf, Jimmy Vesey, stuck it to his former team, scoring two of the Rangers' 3 goals on the night, including the empty net goal to seal the deal and move the Rangers up to 3-1 late in the third, which was the final score.

The media took a subtle jab at Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe, who famously told Vesey during the Amazon Prime "All or Nothing: Toronto Maple Leafs" series a couple of seasons back that his play was "very vanilla". Well, needless to say, the comment from the reporter rubbed Keefe the wrong way and that promptly ended the post-game scrum.

Vesey himself took to Twitter following the game to stick it to a popular Leafs personality, who goes by the name of "@TicTacTOmar" on Twitter. Omar had emphatically stated before the game that Jimmy Vesey would not score. Once he did, he made sure to navigate over to Omar's post and drop a casual "like".

At the end of the day, when all is said and done, nobody is going to remember a game against the Rangers in December. It's all about what the Leafs do the rest of the way and if they can get it done and win big games when it matters this spring and summer. With any luck, perhaps the Leafs will meet the Rangers in the postseason and then we'll see who has the last laugh.
