A 4th round pick of the Leafs in the 2006 draft, current San Jose Sharks goaltender James Reimer is in the final year of his contract and will be a UFA at the end of the season. Reimer made his way through the Leaf system and made his debut in the 2010/2011 season for the Leafs. He is the last goalie the Leafs developed and became a starter for the team. In 207 games, Riemer posted an 85-76-23 record with a .914 save percentage and 2.83GAA.

Since, he has had stops in Florida, Carolina and two separate stops in San Jose. Riemer was beloved by Leafs fans and those fans have wanted him to come back at various times over the past 6 years to help stabilize the position for the Leafs. Being a UFA at the end of the season and with Toronto in town, Riemer was asked what his thoughts were about returning to a big market team (presumably Toronto).

"I wouldn't shy away from a big market. I think the buzz and the atmosphere that's constantly around is fun and something you can feed off of. A big market wouldn't scare me," said Riemer.

If Matt Murray can't stay healthy, Kyle Dubas will certainly look to address the position at or near the trade deadline. San Jose has already confirmed they are willing to listen on essentially everyone on their roster so maybe there is a fit and a trade to be made between the two sides. "Optimus Riem" as he became known, would give the Leafs some additional stability in goal and a veteran that knows about the pressures of playing in Toronto.
