Former Leafs goaltender lands on waivers
As opening night approaches, teams continue to tweak and trim in an attempt to finalize their rosters by releasing players from PTOs or sending them down to AHL camps and sometimes we see a surprising player on waivers.
Today saw only 9 players placed on waivers. One of them is former Leaf goalie Calvin Pickard. You'll remember Pickard from the waiver wire debacle that cost the Leafs all of their goaltending depth a few years ago. The Leafs wanted to give Garrett Sparks a shot at being a backup after 7 years in the organization which meant they had to send both Pickard and Curtis McElhinney through waivers to be sent down.
Both of them were claimed putting the Leafs in a difficult position with goaltending depth. It forced the Leafs to sign Michael Hutchison which also did not go over well at the time.
