Former Montreal Canadien compares Joseph Woll to a young Carey Price following standout performance
Joseph Woll was supposed to have the night off against Tampa. Unfortunately, Ilya Samsonov gave up three goals on four shots which forced Sheldon Keefe to pull him in favour of the rookie netminder. Woll went on to stop all 29 shots he faced in relief and helped the Leafs come back from a 3-1 first period deficit to win 4-3 in overtime.
New Leaf and former Montreal Canadien Max Domi was asked about Woll's relief performance last night and offered some high praise for the 25-year-old netminder. Domi, who assisted on both of Matthew Knies' goals in the third period, spent two seasons in Montreal as a teammate of Carey Price and said that he sees a lot of Price in the young Leafs goaltender.
"He really kind of reminds me of Carey Price in his demeanour. He's very calm and relaxed both on and off the ice. A big body and moves technically sound. I'm not a goalie coach by any means but he's been outstanding."
Following a number of injuries that had set Woll's development back a bit, many scouts and analysts have recognised noted his demeanour and how calm and relaxed he plays. It was something that was constantly brought up while he was with the Leafs last season and the fact that Domi compares those two traits, along with others, to that of Carey Price, a former Vezina Trophy winner and Olympic Gold medalist, means that Woll is on the right path to becoming more than just a backup in the NHL.
Woll is slated to start against Washington on Tuesday where he will look to build on an incredible relief performance in Tampa.
