Former NHL referee burns the Maple Leafs with harsh comments
Long have many believed that NHL officials simply do not like the Toronto Maple Leafs. I'm sure that not EVERY referee in the league has it out for the Leafs, but we know that some, like Wes McCauley for example, certainly do. The evidence is not difficult to find. There are plenty of examples of Leafs games where the officiating is suspect and the penalty scaling heavily favours the opposing team. Just re-watch the Leafs/Lightning playoff series from 2021-22 and tell me I'm making this up.
Again, while not EVERY official carries a bias against the Leafs, one disgraced former NHL official is not longer employed by the league and does not have to watch what he says anymore. Tim Peel has been quite the online presence since his dismissal for the infamous "hot mic" incident a few years back and following the Leafs' 6-5 OT loss to Columbus on Friday, he had no problem tweeting out his thoughts about the team.
Tell us how you really feel, Tim. Peel could have targeted any number of teams for any number of reasons, but it was the Leafs who became the target of his ire this weekend.
Granted, I don't think we can blame Peel for the Samsonov comment, because Sammy has been, let's just say "extremely underwhelming" this season, to put it very, very mildly. He hasn't been good enough, nor does he belong in the NHL right now with how he's played.
After last night's loss, the Leafs have now dropped 3 straight and are in desperate need of something to spark some momentum. Perhaps using Peel's comments as bulletin board material would help motivate the team at a time where they really need some motivation.
