Former Stanley Cup winner has found a unique and fun post-hockey career
A late-bloomer and former Stanley Cup champion has found a rather unique post-hockey career. Former Hawks goaltender Scott Darling, who retired during the 2020/21 season, is now a stand-up comedian.
Scott Darling was best known for helping the Blackhawks win their last and most recent Stanley Cup in 2015. He last played in the NHL for the Hurricanes during the 2018/19 season.
Darling was on SiriusXM NHL Radio this week and spoke of his decision to become a comedian, including the depression he dealt with following his retirement.
"I got depressed when I retired. I was depressed for six months; I didn't know what to do with my life. You live this regimented life for so long and then it's gone and you're like, 'What do I do, what do I do?' I had to figure out something to get me out of bed in the morning."
Stand-up comedy helped him get out of bed in the morning. It's something that he enjoys, but said, "Anybody I played hockey with, any of my teammates. I was quiet, man, I stared at my shoelaces, kind of kept to myself".
Darling admitted he was and is "an anxious, nervous person" who was just a work boots guy who just wanted to do his job and do it quietly. Surprisingly though, Darling admitted that he actually is an outgoing and fun person, but held in his personality because he was so anxious when playing.
We're glad Darling found something he enjoys and has found a new purpose following his retirement. All the best on your new journey, Scott.
