The relationship between team and prospect can sometimes be a difficult one based on the expectations they have from one another. From the prospect's standpoint, they want the team to be invested in them and to provide them with plenty of opportunity and runway. From the team's standpoint, they want the player to give it everything he has during his development period and earn every second of ice time and force their hand before they grant those opportunities.

For Nashville Predators' forward Eeli Tolvanen, he was given every opportunity to succeed and, for one reason or another, it hasn't quite worked out. Tolvanen was once regarded as a steal when the Preds drafted him 30th overall in the 2017 draft. Unfortunately, his game has not translated well to North American ice. Today, he finds himself on waivers.

Tolvanen began to open some eyes during the 2020/21 season, when he registered 22 points (11-11) in 40 games for the Preds. The following season, he only registered 23 points in 75 games, and so far this season, he has just 4 points in 13 games while being in and out of the lineup. Today, Tolvanen has this season and next remaining on his 3-year deal he signed in August 2021. The deal carries a cap hit of $1.45M per season.

It wouldn't come as a surprise if Tolvanen is claimed off waivers before the 2pm deadline tomorrow. Perhaps a fresh start would help rejuvenate his young career.
