Last night, early in the first period Vancouver Canucks forward Dakota Joshua and Maple Leafs defenseman Mark Giordano got into a shoving match in front of the Leafs net over a hit that Joshua had laid on David Kampf. It wasn't long before Gio and Joshua dropped the gloves.

The fight not only fired up the Leafs, but also the usually quiet Scotiabank Arena crowd, who rose to their feet and began chanting "GI-O, GI-O". Following the game, Giordano was asked about his fight against the 27-year-old ex-Leafs prospect. Here's what he had to say:

"That Joshua, I mean, he's a big boy. So, I went over there, and I was like, 'Oh, boy, here we go.' It was good to get into one. I haven't been in one in a while. It got me going, too."

He went on to explain that he felt something had to be done to bring the team some energy because he didn't think they started particularly well.

"I get fired up out there sometimes. You don't just want to be the guy who barks all the time. So, tonight it was just one of those situations: you see your teammate down on the ice, big hit. Sometimes you need something like that to get yourself going. A couple shifts where you don't feel energy, and then I got right into the game after that. Even though I sat for about an hour after that, I felt like I had energy all night."

Giordano's fight seemed the spark the Leafs as Matthew Knies scored shortly after that and Max Domi stepped in to fight Ian Cole after he hit Nick Robertson at the end of the first period, following Gio's lead.

The Leafs showed more toughness in the first game Ryan Reaves was out of the lineup than they have since the first two games of the season. Hopefully it is something that continues, as based on how the fourth line looked last night, Reaves may not see a game for a while.
