While future considerations often lead to nothing over time, on occasion those considerations can turn into a 7th round pick, a depth player or sometimes even a long shot prospect. In the case of this deal between the Leafs and the Preds, we may have the early workings of a player coming back to Toronto.
On Wednesday, the Nashville Predators loaned defenseman Philippe Myers to the AHL's Toronto Marlies. Now, this is where it's a bit tricky. Myers carries a $2.55M cap hit, so if the Leafs took on that contract, it could create some issues for them this season.
By the Preds merely loaning Myers to the Marlies, it helps both the Marlies and the Predators for a number of reasons. It helps the Marlies by giving them a defenseman who can replace the minutes that Biega had played. For the Predators, it helps to keep Myers active, as there is currently no roster spots available for him in Nashville.
It's unclear at this time if there's more to this story. Perhaps the Leafs plan to take that contract off the hands of the Preds this summer? The team has quite a few pending RFA/UFA's and with Myers being under contract through next season ($2.55M AAV), it could provide the Leafs with an extra body to fill a spot in the team's top six, or even as a 7th defenseman.
Is Myers to the Leafs this summer a part of the whole "future considerations" from Nashville? I'll be curious to see if anything more comes from this, information wise, in the upcoming days or whether this is something that we'll have some more clarification on during the offseason.
Myers originally came over to Nashville in the Ryan Ellis, Nolan Patrick, Cody Glass three-way swap with Philly and Vegas.
