IIHF expected to announce WJC tournament cancellation
The IIHF is expected to announce that the 2022 World Junior Championship tournament will be cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns.
This is unfortunate news, but after a trio of games had been cancelled/forfeited over the last 24 hours, that was a pretty good indicator that the tournament would be in jeopardy.
At this point, it remains unclear as to whether or not the tournament will take place at another time and place, but we should have some clarity on that following the release of an official statement from the IIHF.
Per TSN's Bob McKenzie, there is also a news conference in the works, so we'll see what comes from that.
It's a sad day for hockey when we aren't able to ring in the new year with some WJC hockey, as is tradition. Way to go, COVID..
