Boston Bruins star forward David Pastrnak is heading into the final year of his 6-year, $40 million contract and according to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, while the dialogue is ongoing, there is still a fairly substantial gap between the player and the team on a new contract. LeBrun also feels this could be a grind of a negotiation.

Whether it be in Boston or somewhere else, Pastrnak is going to get paid this time around. Given the lofty, long-term deals we just saw Jonathan Huberdeau (8 years at $10.5 million per season) and Johnny Gaudreau (7 years at $9.75 million per season) ink this summer, Pastrnak can likely command a minimum of $10 million per season and possibly north of $11M per season. The Bruins forward has a lot of leverage here. He is still only 27-years-old. And with the cap expected to go up heading into next season, do not be surprised if Pastrnak tops them both.

Pastrnak was originally drafted in the first round (25th overall) of the 2014 NHL entry draft. The Czech Republic native has played his entire 9-year NHL career in Boston. In 518 career games, he has scored 246 goals, good for twelfth all-time among any player in Bruins franchise history. His career year in goals came in the 2019-20 season, when he scored 48 in 70 games, winning the Maurice Rocket Richard Trophy (tying with Alexander Ovechkin).
