Leafs Nation is buzzing on Monday after GM Kyle Dubas pulled the trigger on another high profile trade, this time with the Chicago Blackhawks, landing defenseman Jake McCabe and forward Sam Lafferty. The Buds moved yet another 1st round pick (2025, top 10 protected), a 2026 2nd round pick, depth winger Joey Anderson and AHLer Pavel Gogolev. 50% of McCabe's contract has been retained. Both McCabe and Lafferty have term remaining on their current deals.

While the deal itself is exciting enough for Leaf fans, there is another detail about this deal, according to DFO's Frank Seravalli, that is really important. This trade means that the Leafs have another move coming, as they'll be over the cap if they don't move someone from the active roster.

Justin Holl is a name that could be shipped out with McCabe coming in. They carry the same cap hit with Toronto ($2M) and Holl is an unrestricted free agent this summer. However, it's Alexander Kerfoot, not Holl, that Seravalli believes could be moved.

Seravalli mentioned that he has heard some chatter that the Vancouver Canucks could be a potential landing spot for Kerfoot. He did also mention as a secondary thought that Pierre Engvall might also be a candidate to move.
