While all the talk is about Matthews' extension, Nylander's next contract will come with a hefty raise from the $6.9M he is currently making per season. According to Darren Dreger, Nylander's next deal is approaching the price tag of Mitch Marner's current contract AAV of 10.9M.
Granted, it's a little early to begin talking about contract values for Nylander's next deal, since there's still a half-year left until he's eligible to sign an extension, but we do know that Nylander's agent, Lewis Gross, loves to squeeze teams for every dollar possible. We saw it in the first Nylander deal, following a lengthy holdout, and we saw it yet again in the Rasmus Sandin negotiations this summer.
Thankfully, the salary cap is supposed to jump exponentially over the next few seasons, which should help the Leafs afford Nylander and Matthews' new deals, even if Willy's AAV does eclipse the $10M plateau.
