Insider reveals the only scenario in which Dubas will trade his 2023 1st rounder

The last time Kyle Dubas traded a first round pick at the deadline, it backfired tremendously when he acquired Nick Foligno. Foligno only played a handful of games for the Leafs due to various injuries and was never fully healthy when the games mattered most. Not only was trading a first round pick at the deadline unusual for Dubas, but so was acquiring a pure rental player. Needless to say, it appears as though he has learned his lesson.

With the Leafs on pace to set another franchise record for points this season, and the daunting task of making it out of the first round ahead of them, Dubas has to do everything he can to help get the team over the hump. Without a contract beyond June 30th this year, if there is any time for Dubas to unload the cupboards and kitchen sink, which includes first round picks, this is it.

It had been reported that the Leafs do not want to part with their first round pick in what is expected to be a very deep draft this year. However, TSN's Chris Johnston has reported this morning that the situation may change. Johnston reports that if the Leafs can find the right deal, meaning a player or players with term or team control, Dubas is, in fact, willing to part with the first round pick. In a year where they have to win a round in the playoffs, losing a first round pick and a prospect or two for a top six forward is well worth the price. The question is, does Dubas have the stomach to go all-in and make the big splash?
