On the "CJ Show" on Monday, Johnston reported that there have been no real contract negotiations or discussions that have taken place between Sandin and the Leafs. He also said that there is no real rush given that Sandin is an RFA without arbitration rights. While some may look at this as a bad thing, I wouldn't. The Leafs will obviously be issuing a qualifying offer to Sandin, ensuring they retain his rights and have the opportunity to match any offer sheet that he may be presented with.
The Leafs have to figure out what to do with the log jam they have on their blue line and where they can fit Sandin in given the fact Liljegren has passed both him and Holl on the depth chart. Additionally, the Leafs have to prioritize their draft preparations and negotiations for UFAs like Jack Campbell and Ilya Mikheyev.
CJ also mentioned that the Leafs love Sandin and that he wants to be a Leaf. It's highly likely that contract will get done and Sandin will be on the Leafs' roster next season. Unfortunately, it just isn't at the top of their priority list right now.
